What is geolocation and why do journalists use it?

Geolocation is the process of determining where a photograph or video was taken. In investigative journalism, it is used to verify the authenticity of user-generated content (UGC), confirm or refute claims about where events occurred, and provide independent corroboration of source accounts. It is particularly important when covering protests, civil unrest, conflict, planning disputes, and any story where the location of an event is disputed.

The technique involves identifying distinctive visual features in an image — buildings, street signs, vegetation, terrain, road markings, vehicle types — and matching them against maps, satellite imagery, and street-level photography. A geolocation is only as strong as the evidence trail you document. Screenshots with timestamps, URLs, methodology notes, and cross-referenced sources create an auditable record that will withstand editorial scrutiny and, if necessary, legal challenge.

UK-specific visual markers for geolocation

Road signs

UK motorway signs: white on blue. A-road signs: white on green. B-road and local: black on white. Distances in miles (not kilometres). Direction signs use the Transport typeface.

Post boxes

Red cylindrical post boxes with Royal Cypher lettering. Victorian boxes: VR cipher. Edwardian: ER VII. Post-1953 Elizabeth II boxes: EIIR. This can help date photographs and narrow location to installation period.

Vehicle number plates

UK plates: white front, yellow rear, black text. Format changed in September 2001 to the current two-letter area code, two-digit year, three-letter sequence system. Pre-2001 plates follow regional prefix formats.

Street name plates

Most English and Welsh councils: white text on black background with a border. Scottish councils vary — many use white on blue. London boroughs often have distinctive styles.

Architecture

UK building types — Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, 1960s council estates, 1980s-90s retail park design — can narrow geographic and era range significantly.

Yellow road markings

Single and double yellow lines are a distinctly UK feature. Red lines appear in some London boroughs and city centres (Red Routes). This alone distinguishes UK streets from continental European footage.

When geolocation is essential

Red flags that should trigger verification

  • Image or video shared without clear provenance — no EXIF metadata, no original account, unclear chain of custody.
  • EXIF metadata present but inconsistent with claimed location or time (check time zone offsets).
  • Visual markers in the image contradict the claimed location — wrong road sign format, wrong vehicle plates.
  • Shadow direction or angle inconsistent with the claimed time and location when tested in SunCalc.
  • Historic satellite imagery shows the alleged background feature was not present at the claimed date.
  • Image appears suspiciously pixelated or artefacted around key identifying features — possible manipulation.
  • Reverse image search returns earlier instances of the image being used in a different context.

Geolocation evidence checklist

Yes, but carefully. Google Street View imagery is timestamped and you can access historic imagery (use the clock icon in Street View). Screenshot the Street View image with the timestamp visible. Record the URL, which contains the coordinates. Be aware that Street View imagery may be months or years old — it confirms what a location looked like at the time of capture, not necessarily at the time of your subject image. For current-state verification, compare with recent satellite imagery from Sentinel Hub or Planet.

What are the legal issues around using geolocated imagery in UK journalism?
Geolocation itself is a research technique, not a publication act. The legal issues arise at publication. If the geolocation reveals a private individual's home address, there may be a misuse of private information claim under the Human Rights Act 1998. If the image identifies a crime victim, contempt of court or reporting restrictions may apply. Where the geolocation confirms a public official's location in a matter of public interest, the public interest defence under s.4 Defamation Act 2013 (adapted for privacy) may apply.
